The Crossroads community is invited to meet Victoria College's men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams during VC Pirates Day on Wednesday. The VC Pirates men's basketball team will play a VC Pirates alumni team at 6 p.m. in the VC Sports Center gym followed by the women's basketball game at 8 p.m.

The traveling exhibit, "Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition," opens Thursday at Victoria College's Museum of the Coastal Bend. Through engaging text, colorful photography and short films, the exhibit educates audiences about the impact of Texas Czechs on the state's shared culture and about the value of cultural preservation.

"The Art of Design, Select Works from Graphic Designer Gary Hughes," will be on display beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday through 5 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Fine Arts Gallery of Victoria College. A reception featuring the artist will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Fine Arts Building. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The Victoria Family YMCA, in partnership with Victoria College, will open its new Early Learning Center for children ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years. The center will serve as a year-round preschool and features active mind, active play curriculum designed to enhance spatial learning and development, according to a news release from the YMCA.

Some 376 Victoria College students will graduate during VC's 89th annual commencement at 10 a.m. Saturday in the VISD Fine Arts Center. VC mathematics professor Diana Pagel will give the commencement address, and Zeke Dierlam will be the student speaker at the ceremony.

Instruments and voices will be featured when Victoria College musicians perform in two separate concerts Monday and Tuesday. The fourth annual Concert on the Quad featuring the Victoria College Commercial Band and Victoria College Jazz Combo will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the outdoor amphitheater area outside the VC Fine Arts Building.

Fascinating stuff! The ancient skeleton of a child was discovered near the village of Mal’ta in south-central Siberia in the late-1920's. A recent DNA analysis of the skeleton, believed to be 24,000 years old, has shown that the Mal’ta child’s people were ancestors of modern Native Americans, suggesting First Americans came directly from Siberia.

Victoria College's Fine Arts Department will open its Spring Student Art Exhibit with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the VC Fine Arts Building. Paintings, drawings, ceramics and collages created by VC art students will be displayed from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays from Thursday to April 25 in the gallery of the Fine Arts Building.
