Folk songs of Mexico and Europe will be performed by the Victoria College Choir and the Victoria Civic Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 in the Johnson Symposium on VC's Main Campus. The concert is free and open to the public. According to the Victoria Advocate, the choral groups will perform folk songs from Bohemia and Moravia, which are both part of the Czech lands. These works are by Johannes Brahms and Antonn Dvorak and will be performed in German and Czech. The Victoria Civic Chorus will also sing two Moravian folk songs in English. The longest work of the evening is Carlos Chavez's "La Paloma Azul," an arrangement of traditional Mexican songs originally published in 1956. Carlos Chavez is a Mexican composer who had an international career as a composer, conductor, and music educator in the 20th century. As a finale, the combined choirs will perform a popular Beatles tune.
