Today is Juneteenth, which celebrates the date – June 19, 1865 – when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and enforce the end of slavery in Texas more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The servicemen and women of our country make huge sacrifices to fight battles on our behalf and keep the freedoms we hold dear. One of those sacrifices is being away from their families and loved ones for long periods of time.

The Calhoun County Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day dedication at 10 a.m. Monday at Bayfront Peninsula.
