Today is Juneteenth, which celebrates the date – June 19, 1865 – when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and enforce the end of slavery in Texas more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. There are several theories as to why it took so long get the news to Texas, one of which blames a lack of Union soldiers in the area to enforce the new law. You may draw your own conclusions.

The Old Landmark Committee will host a Multicultural Taste of Soul at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Riverside Park Special Events Area. The event is free and guaranteed to be fun for the entire family.
