National Night Out will be celebrated in Victoria on Oct. 7. National Night Out will kick off with a bang of entertainment this year. From magic shows and juggling to dancing by East and West High School's Ballet Foklorico groups, entertainment will be the focus of the annual event, which is hosted by the Victoria Police Department. The activities begins at noon at the Victoria Mall in front of Dilliard's department store, and is scheduled to end at 3 p.m. National Night Out was created 30 years ago to promote citizen policing in neighborhoods and build strong relationships with local law enforcement, Senior Patrol Officer John Turner told the Victoria Advocate. The kick off event, he said helps create a buzz about neighborhood watch programs.

Texas Department of Public Transportation also will attend the event, bringing with them a vehicle roll-over simulator machine to show people the impact of not wearing a seatbelt. Other organizations attending the event include Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Marines and Navy and the American Red Cross.

Anyone interested in having an event in their neighborhood or starting up a neighborhood watch program, can call the Crime Prevention Unit at 361-485-3808.
