Victoria Parks and Rec to Host a FREE Youth Hunting Experience!

Even if your child has NEVER hunted before nor has the hunting equipment, Victoria Parks and Recreation will cover it all!

I know several families I can share this article with, maybe you do too?

Not all families have the opportunity to hunt, which means a lot of children in the Crossroads who have an interest in hunting deer or hog have never had the chance to do so.

Victoria Parks and Recreation is inviting several youths ages 12 to 16 to join them for their Parks & Recreation Overnight Youth Hunting Program.

I titled the article "experience" because this new program is the TOTAL HUNTING EXPERIENCE.

Participants will learn about wildlife conservation, basic survival skills and how to process game. But that's not all. The hunt includes overnight camping in Riverside Park as well as meals, firearms, and ammunition.

The Texas Youth Hunting Program was established by the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks & Wildlife to preserve the tradition of hunting and to educate youth about ethical hunting practices and conservation.

A guardian must accompany each participant.

Each participant must be accompanied by a guardian throughout the hunt with priority given to those youth who have not hunted previously.

If your child is 12 to 16 yrs old, you are welcome to apply for the program now through 5 p.m. Nov. 12 by creating an account at www.tyhp.org.

Mark your calendar for Dec 10th through the 12th.

The Texas Youth Hunting Program deer and hog hunt will be hosted from 5 p.m. Dec. 10 to noon Dec. 12 in Riverside Park by Parks & Recreation, the Texas Wildlife Association and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

What if you don't have a hunting license?

Parks & Recreation will help participants obtain their hunting licenses if needed.

Riverside Park will be closed to the public during the hunt.

The deer population in Riverside Park has been steadily increasing for years, which can lead to problems like traffic collisions, habitat degradation, and disease concerns. Texas Parks & Wildlife recommends letting each participant harvest three does; one buck; and an unlimited number of hogs during the hunt.

Where can you get more information?

For more information about the hunt, contact Parks & Recreation at 361-485-3200 or parks@victoriatx.gov.
