WATCH: Galveston’s Water Is Clear and Blue For Now

If you needed a sign to hit the beach, this is it. Galveston’s water is shockingly clear right now, like “see your toes” clear, thanks to a temporary shift in Gulf currents.

Most of the year, currents shove sediment-rich water from the Mississippi/Atchafalaya toward the Texas shoreline, turning the water "tea-colored." That doesn’t mean the water is “dirty”; it’s mostly sand, clay, and organic material that fish love.

However, when winds go light and patterns flip, clearer, saltier water slides up from the south, and the sediment settles out. This shift creates the blue/clear water days like this.

What is a 'counter current?'

Every so often, a central Gulf counter current expands and the normal down-coast flow stalls. That break in the conveyor belt lets pretty water creep into Galveston. It’s not rare-rare, but it’s short-lived, so if you want to see clear water in Texas, you'll need to hurry.

Does the color of water equate to cleanliness?

Yes. In fact, the color of the water doesn't equate to its cleanliness. Texas weather/data scientist Dr. Hal “Hurricane” Needham says the blue look is a natural shift from wind/current patterns, not a health issue. So, go out and enjoy the view while it lasts.
