Announcing Targeted Water Restrictions For Victoria, Texas
With all the rain we have had in Victoria lately, it's surprising that the City of Victoria is asking us to start conserving water. But, because of the drought upstream, we are being affected here.
We should all take steps now to avoid more restrictive guidelines. The more we conserve now, the better for the City of Victoria.
Victoria residents are being asked to conserve water as the Guadalupe River, a critical water source, faces lower-than-usual levels due to upstream drought conditions.
Victoria Public Works Department has issued guidelines to help the strain on our local water resources:
- Lawn Care Tips: Residents are advised to limit watering to one inch per week to sustain healthy grass. Watering early in the morning or late evening is best to minimize evaporation. Using sprinklers with larger droplets and avoiding windy days ensures efficient water use.
- Drought Contingency Plan: Victoria has activated Stage One of its drought contingency plan under a 1998 water permit. This stage encourages voluntary water conservation measures to keep water usage below critical levels.
- Water System Backup: The city's water system includes backup reservoirs to support supply during low river flow periods. However, pumping limits are enforced to protect the river ecosystem.
Residents are encouraged to visit www.victoriatx.gov/droughtplan for updated information, or you can contact Public Works at 361-485-3380 for more information on how they can contribute to water conservation efforts. Using these guidelines, Victoria residents can play a vital role in ensuring a sustainable water supply for their community amidst challenging environmental conditions.
