Did you know that Victoria College has a Museum on campus. Victoria College’s Museum of the Coastal Bend, located on VC’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street, is the only museum that houses artifacts from Fort St. Louis, the first French settlement in Texas.
In its permanent “Where Texas History began” exhibit, the museum, which opened in 2003, displays seven of the eight cannons brought to Texas by French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. The cannons were discovered at the Fort St. Louis site in Victoria County.
The Museum of the Coastal Bend also offers exhibits on early inhabitants of the Coastal Bend, and artifacts from La Salle’s ship La Belle, which sank near Matagorda Bay.
The museum, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., also offers events for young and old throughout the year. For more information, visit MuseumOfTheCoastalBend.org.
