Victoria County Sherriff's Offices Shares New Scam Alert

Scam attempts are something that we have to live with, and sometimes we get spikes in certain scam types. Currently, in Victoria, there is a jury duty scam targeting Victoria residents. The scam starts with a call from someone claiming to be law enforcement demanding payment for missed jury duty.

Law enforcement will never call you and demand payment for anything.

In light of the jury duty scam, the Victoria Sheriff's Department is reminding residents that law enforcement will never call demanding a payment for anything. Victoria residents should never provide any kind of personal or financial information to anyone performing one of these calls. People should not follow the caller's instructions and never send gift cards or electronic payments.

You can also get scammed via text.

The most notable text scam is the "unpaid toll" scam that comes in waves. In this scam, you are given a link to click, so you can pay your tolls before getting your license suspended.

A similar text scam occurred in Victoria last year, where you would receive a text demanding payment for unpaid traffic citations. While the Victoria Municipal Court sends court reminders via text, the court will never ask for payment over text.

Just remember that scamming will never go away, and after a few months, the same scam will make another round. For example, I have gotten "unpaid tool" text on four different occasions during the past two years. Yes, the IRS and student loan scams are also still occurring as well. Stay vigilant.
