Austin has become the pilot city for robot deliveries in Texas.

We live in extraordinary times, with technology making some of its biggest advancements in the last decade, we can expect to see more use of artificial intelligence in our great state, starting in Austin this week with robot deliveries.

Where do these robots come from and where will they be in Austin?

Say hello to the REV-I!

Developed by the team at Refraction AI, who build and deploy robotic platforms for providing safe and scalable last-mile goods delivery in urban areas, the REV-I is the first of its kind in Austin. The three-wheeled devices are two-and-a-half feet wide, four-and-a-half feet tall and four-and-a-half feet long, which is approximately the size of a person on a bicycle.

Refraction AI sent a fleet of 10 REV-I robots to Austin to start their pilot program Monday to begin making food deliveries with participating businesses using the bike lanes in the South Congress area and throughout downtown.

How will the REV-Is know where to go?

During the pilot program, the REV-I delivery robots will not be automated, instead, they will be remotely piloted. The Austin Transportation Department, which has been working on this program with city officials since 2017, offered that REV-I will use Austin's bike lanes unless it's necessary for them to travel on the streets of Austin.

"Using a host of sensors and cameras, a remote operator maintains supervision over the device at all times. Currently, another member of Refraction's team also accompanies the robot throughout each stage of its journey and is happy to answer any questions you may have when you see them out and about," ATD offers.

What can the REV-I deliver?

This is the food delivery of the future! The REV-I can hold up to 7 bags of groceries and a myriad of to-go food containers.
