On Monday, March 24, 2025, Victoria County Animal Services (VCAS) responded to a report of a skunk lingering near a home on Burkhart Road (Precinct 1) in the afternoon. The skunk was collected and sent to the Texas. Department of Health and Human Services lab in Austin, where it tested positive for rabies.

First case in Southern Victoria County

At this time, there are no reported exposures to humans or domestic animals.
Residents are urged to protect their pets by ensuring they are up to date on rabies
vaccinations and keeping them secured on their property. Texas law requires dogs and
cats to be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age, with the vaccine administered by a licensed veterinarian. Be

  • Nocturnal animals active during the day
    Aggression
    Disorientation
    Excessive drooling
    Lameness

Anyone observing suspicious wildlife behavior should avoid contact and report it to
Victoria County Animal Services at 361-578-3564.
