Dog Park to Finally Break Ground and the Latest on the Duck Pond
First of all, let's start out with the duck pond. It is so nice to have construction and renovations well underway for the Duck Pond. The latest information after speaking with the Parks and Rec Department the tentative opening date for the new duck pond is the Summer of 2023!
Features of the restored pond will include:
- A wall around the edge of the pond to prevent erosion
- A duck feeding area with seating along the side of the pond
- Water fountains with LED lighting
- A floating fishing pier
- A more spacious gazebo overlook protruding over the surface of the pond
THE DOG PARK:
After many rumors, the time has finally come! The public is invited to celebrate the start of construction on the Riverside Park dog park at 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the intersection of Young Drive and Memorial Drive.If you grew up in Victoria, that what the site of a playground that hold memories for many of us.
The groundbreaking will be open to in-person attendance and will be live-streamed on Facebook at City of Victoria, Texas – Government. Representatives of the City of Victoria and the Parks & Recreation Commission will speak at the event.
The creation of a dog park is one of the goals outlined in the Parks & Recreation master plan. During the community input phase, residents were surveyed about the types of facilities they’d like to see, and a dog park was the most popular write-in choice.
The Dog Park plans to open in May of 2023 and will include these amenities:
- Separate fenced areas for large and small dogs
- Dog agility equipment
- Drinking fountains for humans and dogs
- Smaller fenced-off areas for dogs who need a break
- Additional parking nearby
- Disposable bags so visitors can pick up after their dogs
While the dog park is under construction, Parks & Recreation will be finalizing the rules that will be posted at the park. The rules that staff is considering include bans on aggressive dogs, dogs in heat, and young puppies that are susceptible to illness.
THE RIVER GOT HOW HIGH
Last year in May of 2021, I was near the duck pond, and I snapped this picture of the river level and this reminder of just how high the water got during the flood of 98'. The red line marked the highest point of just over 33.8 feet. The level of the Guadalupe River in the picture was 23.56 feet.
