As we all know, bullriding is a dangerous sport. It goes beyond just broken bones and sore backs. KSAT 12, San Antonio, reports a tragic ride that caused the death of a bull rider from San Antonio in a small-town rodeo in Bandera, Texas.

Bullrider Peter DeLuna, 22, was thrown off a bull at the Riding on Faith Rodeo Summer Series at Mansfield Arena in Bandera. After he was thrown from the bull, he was stepped on by the bull. According to emergency officials, he was able to walk out of the arena but then collapsed. The EMS and the sheriff's department were called, and DeLuna was transported to the Bandera medical landing zone, where he was found to be nonresponsive at the scene.

Bull riding is considered the most extreme sport in the world for a reason. It is hazardous; it can maim, break bones, or lead to death when thrown from a 1500 or 2000-pound bull.

Statistics are hard to calculate. While the PRCA and PBR keep stats on injuries or deaths, many smaller rodeos don't. There was another rider injured at the same rodeo in Bandera. He was treated for a head injury and released from the hospital, according to authorities.

Many of the small rodeos, like Riding On Faith in Bandera, attract amateur athletes, which can increase the chance of injury.

Watching Cowboys and Cowgirls compete at Rodeos is exciting; millions love it. But there is always an inherent danger of injury or death when these athletes perform.
