Starting Tuesday, teams from area companies will compete in the 28th annual YMCA Corporate Cup, which promotes good health, wellness and company morale. The opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at the Victoria Adult Softball Complex and launches the competition with tug-of-war and volleyball. The events run through Sept. 27, ending with a company picnic and awards ceremony at Lowe Field in Riverside Park. Since 1986, Golden Crescent companies have come together each year to compete in the YMCA Corporate Cup. Twenty teams from 19 companies signed up this year to compete in 18 scheduled events, including bowling, basketball, swimming and potato sack races. Historically, as many as 45 teams from 33 companies have competed in Corporate Cup. But in 2012, only six teams signed up.

Rosalinda Ramirez, YMCA's wellness director and Corporate Cup director, told the Victoria Advocate she's confident this year will be a success with some new teams and some returning. "All the money raised goes to the YMCA's youth scholarship fund," she said. She said organizers added a new event, the Punt, Pass, Kick, because of a suggestion made by coaches last year.
