Aprill Brandon: "A Mile Away from Tragedy"

Former Crossroads resident and Victoria Advocate entertainment reporter, Aprill Brandon, was a guest (via telephone from her current home in Boston, MA) on Skeeter's show this morning. Aprill was about a mile away from the site of the terrorist bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15th, and she wrote a blog piece chronicling her experiences on that tragic day.

Victoria Traffic To Get 'Loopy'

After some 20 months of construction, the new lanes of Loop 463 (aka Zac Lentz Parkway) will open at approximately 8:30am today (4/16/13). According to a TDOT press release, the newly-constructed west-bound main lanes of the Loop will open to traffic and the frontage roads will remain open as normal, except for at the Salem Road intersections, where traffic will be required to stop. The lane-switching at these intersections will allow the Salem Road traffic to travel through the intersections with both east-and west-bound frontage roads, without stopping.

Recent news stories of single-family fires here in the Crossroads region reminded me of the time my wife and I spent as volunteers with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team in our previous home area of Northeast Arkansas. We saw first-hand how the Red Cross can make a difference in the lives of families who have been victims of a fire in their home. Local Red Cross chapters can offer assistance with temporary shelter, food, and clothing, as well as diapers, medicines, and other immediate needs. But did you know that the Red Cross receives NO government funding?

Gordon Stoker–Tenor Singer with The Jordanaires–Passes at 88

Gordon Stoker, tenor singer for Country Music Hall of Fame vocal group the Jordanaires, died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2013, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. He was 88.

The Jordanaires’ harmonies can be heard on some of the most famous recordings from the 1960s and early ‘70s, particularly the Elvis Presley classics “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” and “It’s Now or Never.”

Amateur ("Ham") radio operators from all over will converge on the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds (4200 Highway 36, Rosenberg, Texas) for the Greater Houston Hamfest Saturday, March 23rd. Ham radio is a great hobby, as well as a means of emergency communications when other systems fail. Presented by the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club, this is the 2nd largest hamfest in Texas!

Saddened to hear of the passing of Grand Ole Opry star and Country music legend, Jack Greene at the age of 83. His many hits included "There Goes My Everything," "Statue Of a Fool," "All The Time," and many more. This photo was taken backstage at the Opry in December of 2000. He was a true gentleman, and loved entertaining his fans.
