It's probably safe to say that the rose has been the most-written-about flower in songs of practically all genres. Think of "San Antonio Rose" (Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys), "Room Full of Roses" (George Morgan, Mickey Gilley), "Rose Garden" (Lynn Anderson) or "The Rose" (Bette Midler, Conway Twitty). If you like to grow your own roses, you'll want to attend the Winter Rose Pruning Workshop in (where else?) the Memorial Rose Garden at Riverside Park.

It happens Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. Learn from Parks Department expert gardeners how to winter-prune roses to prepare your rose bushes for maximum color this spring. There will be hands-on demonstrations, followed by practicing winter-pruning techniques on the Hybrid tea, Grandiflora, climbing, and Flolribunda roses growing there in the garden.

Participants are asked to bring their own bypass hand pruner, gloves, and something to drink. To protect from thorns, you're encouraged to wear long-sleeved clothing. For more info, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at (361) 485-3200. Space is limited, so make your reservation today!
