When Selena Played at Riverside Convention Center in 1993

Today we remember and celebrate what would the 50th birthday of the Queen of Cumbia and Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla Perez!  For those of those who had to opportunity to see her perform in Victoria, know that she was electric on stage.

Thanks to Victoria resident, Raquel Vasquez, we have this action shot of her performing at the Riverside Convention Center back in 1993. This was just a few months before she released her album 'Amor Prohibido,' which is the record that sent her through the stratosphere.  At the time of this concert, her biggest hits were 'La Carcacha,' and 'Como La Flor.' and that was enough for Headliner status and enough to sell out the Riverside.  Raquel remembers 'people standing on tables' to get a good view of the Tejano legend.  Maybe do the 'washing machine' in memory of Selena today!

The Riverside, Sun Valley Ranch, and Bluebonnet Convention Center were popping just about every weekend. With the local dance hall sound of Bobby Alan Jones, Emotions, Joel Nava, Rythm of the Road. Schroeder Hall and Inez bringing us the best in Texas Country and Red Dirt and yes Victoria was also a state hotspot for Tejano music as well.  Being Tejano and proud, this is something I really appreciated.

The list of big-time Tejano shows I witnessed in Victoria goes on and on.  La Mafia, David Lee Garza, La Diferenzia, Intocable, Los Palominos, Little Joe, Gary Hobbs, La Tropa F, Jaime Y Los Chamacos are just a few to mention. I also remember a sold-out show at the Sun Valley with Emilio Navaria Y Grupo Rio before he crossed over to Country. Cars were parked up and down Cuero HIghway. Who remembers the great dance hall scene of the '90s in Victoria?
