The City of Victoria Texas Is Looking for A New Mayor
After years of supporting our community as a businessman, philanthropist, and volunteer, The Mayor of Victoria, Jeff Bauknight has announced his intent to run for the Texas House of Representatives, as Geanie Morrison, the longest-serving Republican woman in the Texas House of Representatives, announces she will not seek a 14th term.
“With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek reelection to the Texas House of Representatives." Morrison offered her constituents.
Mayor Baulknight is a member of the Victoria Sales Tax Development Corporation, Victoria Economic Development Corporation, Legislative Committee, Compensation Committee, and the Appraisal District board.
Baulknight was first elected to the City Council in 2013 and has been serving the community as a council member for a decade since.
According to Victoria's most recent civic alert which you can read in detail here, Bauknight’s announcement of his candidacy for state office “shall constitute an automatic resignation” from the office of mayor.
Bauknight will remain in his role until a new mayor is elected.
The City of Victoria has six candidates residents can choose from during the upcoming mayoral special election.
The following residents filed for candidacy before the Dec. 4 deadline:
- Peter Brown – Project Manager
- Robert “Bob” Constantine – Chief Operations Officer
- Duane Crocker – Attorney
- Jacob Sauseda – Technical Director
- Josephine E. Soliz – Bookkeeper
- Karissa Winters – Community Lead
Under state law, a new mayor must be chosen by special election within 120 days of Bauknight’s resignation, but the election may not be held within 30 days before or after a general election for state and county officers, general primary election, or runoff primary election.
Victoria’s next general election is scheduled for May 4, and the primary election will take place on March 5th.
As Victoria continues to grow, we thank those who serve our community by volunteering to create more opportunities for all of us.
