THROWBACK THURSDAY: We Miss Siesta and El Toro
Every Thursday, I take it back with my Throwback Thursday Series. Check out the previous stories in this series at the end of the article. Just in case you haven't seen them yet.
SIESTA:
This week we remember two of the best Mexican restaurants that Victoria has ever seen. Siesta Restaurant on Houston Highway and El Toro on Port Lavaca Highway. I mean, I still remember walking through the front door of Siesta and being greeted by Josie before ordering the McCall's Enchiladas I still consider the refried beans at Siesta to be the best ever to be served at a Mexican Restaurant. Do you remember Josie? What was your favorite menu item at Siesta? Let us know in the Facebook comments of this status.
EL TORO
While Siesta was absolutely bomb, I always considered their sister restaurant El Toro just a little bit better when it came to food quality. The food was always hot and the portion size was very generous and the building itself had just a little more personality. From using the tiny bathrooms in the corner to using the parking lot that you entered in on Callis St. El Toro was definitely one of a kind.
It did not matter which restaurant you went to, the Trevino family built a warm, friendly family environment that made you feel welcome.
CLOSED FOR GOOD:
Siesta closed its doors for good in 2012 after 56 years of business in Victoria. Frances Maries currently sits at the old Siesta location and does pay tribute to the Trevino family with many menu items that were featured at Siesta. The old El Toro location has been various Mexican Restaurants but none have been a successful as El Toro.
