SA Homeless Man Rescued from Garbage Truck w/ Compactor
It was a terrifying awakening when a homeless man in San Antonio was woken up this morning, completely startled as he found himself being tumbled into a garbage truck with a compactor after haven fallen asleep inside a dumpster behind a local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Sadly, it's not uncommon for the homeless to seek refuge and shelter overnight in trash dumpsters, especially in the colder winter months.
Kens5 reported the incident first thing this morning on their local San Antonio channel as the incident happened before the sun was up today at 5am.
The gentleman must have been truly terrified waking up like that! Thankfully the driver of the garbage truck heard the homeless man banging on the sides of the truck while screaming and was able to call for help to rescue him. The SA Fire Department as well as SAPD were able to safely remove the man from the truck.
According to the official report, "The driver called for help and the fire department was able to get the man out of the truck. Emergency Medical Services transported the man to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."
Police said the incident is being ruled an accident and the garbage truck driver is not expected to face any charges.
Locally, the Victoria Homeless Coalition, whose mission is to help people help the homeless, is looking for funding during the cold weather months to offer shelter for the homeless in local hotels in order to avoid incidents such as this, which of course could have ended horrifically.
