The original document was then copied 5 times and signed by the 59 men who gathered at Washington on the Brazos. These settlers created the Republic of Texas which was led by David G. Burnet until the official election of Sam Houston as the first President of the Republic. According to NBCDFW only one of the original documents is still known to be in existence.

Texas stayed an independent republic for about 9 years before it was annexed by the US as the 28th state in the year 1845.

From the first shot fired at the Battle of Gonzales in October of 1835 to the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, so much of the great history of our state began early in the month of March so many years ago. With so many communities in our listening area playing a part in Texas independence, we feel this is just one more thing that makes living in the Crossroads extra special.

Something many Texans are looking forward to is a new film that is coming from the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation. The trailer will be released today for the Texas Independence Day Digital History Celebration video titled “Independence! A Lone Star Rises.”

The video will debut later this month on the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. On Wednesday, March 31st the video will be streamed at 1 pm and again at 7 pm. You will also be able to find the video on the Texas Historical Commission on Youtube.
