Team Roping for CASA Saturday

For eight years, David Rutherford and his board members have been roping in money for the Golden Crescent Court Appointed Special Advocates. The Rope for the Kids team roping benefit had a small beginning, raising $3,500 in its first year. But Saturday, Rutherford expects to surpass last year's $40,000 total. "Everything we make, 100 percent of it goes to CASA," Rutherford told the Victoria Advocate. "It's grown every year, and hopefully this year, it will be better."

While the roping starts Saturday, a cook-off precedes the event Friday, with a 50/30/20 pay out. On Saturday, the books for roping open at 9 a.m., and roping begins at 10:30 a.m. and is free to watch. The day starts with No. 9 roping followed by No. 11 and No. 13 slide roping. A saddle will go to the high money header and heeler of the day for No. 9 and No. 11 roping. Teams will challenge one another, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to CASA, which helps children by representing them in court.

Aside from the roping, there will also be a mechanical bull, bounce houses and rock wall for the kids, he said. There is also a live auction, as well as beer garden and food and drink stands.
