The police department in one California town has gone to the dogs.

The Escondido Police Department has announced it has promoted Jena, an 8-year-old German shepherd, to detective:

The decision was made to promote Jena to detective where her skills could be used to assist detectives with narcotic interdiction and she would not be subject to the physical demands of a patrol service dog.

Jena joined the department in 2010, working as a patrol K9, sniffing for suspects and evidence and helping to locate wanted men and women. The department utilized her services over 1,000 times.

She becomes the first canine to make detective in the department's history.
