Several instruments are integral to country music, especially in Texas. They are Guitars, Slide Guitars, and the Violin, known in Texas as the Fiddle.

The Fiddle holds a special place in Texas country music. As the Alabama song lyrics go, " If you're gonna play in Texas, you need a fiddle in the band." This line reflects the fiddle's cultural importance in the Texan music scene.

Halletsville, Texas, is the home of the Texas State Fiddle Championships. It's an annual two-day event held at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Hallettsville from April 26 to 28 this year. The event draws in the best fiddlers in the state and contestants from the rest of the USA. Sorry to tell you Texans, but we do share the Fiddle with other country music-loving states.

Charlie Daniels reminded us that in the hit song, " The Devil Went Down to Georgia looking for a soul to steal. He was in a bind cause he was way behind, and he was willing to make a deal." He bet Johnny a Fiddle of gold against his soul."

I doubt the Devil will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hallettsville, Texas, but Fiddles of Gold will undoubtedly perform on both days and compete for the Texas State Fiddle Champion Title.

The events draw more than just fiddlers. You will find all types of artists, from writers and photographers to painters. Be sure to catch Diamond Rio on Sunday afternoon, April 28, as the band closes out the festival.
