BBB Advises: Donate To a Charity You Can Trust

September marks a month which recognizes worthy causes. The anniversary of 9/11 and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month may have people considering a donation to a charity. Tom Hanks’ Typewriter App Shoots To The Top Of The App Store

When I was in junior high school in the early-1970's (yes, I'm not a "Spring chicken" anymore), I learned to type in a summer school class, on a manual typewriter. At about that same time, my Mom bought an electric typewriter, and for the next 15 years or so, I used that machine to type out everything from homework reports in high school to song lyrics for bands I played in over the years. Sometime in the early-90's, it finally died, and I moved on to computers with word processors. I'm sure there are many people reading this who have never experienced the feeling of pushing down on a character key and hearing the "clack" as the letter hammer snapped into contact with the paper, transferring--character by character--your thoughts to a blank sheet of paper.

BBB Warns Social Media Users to Beware of Phishing Messages

These days almost every social media outlet allows for private messaging. Even Pinterest recently jumped on the messaging bandwagon. The unfortunate side effect is that scammers are quick to jump on too.

BBB: Students Give Financial Aid Scams a Failing Grade

The college fall semester will kick off soon, so now is the time to beware of scams targeting students. Scholarships and financial aid are a great way to help with the high cost of education. The ‘Cell Phone Slows Restaurant Service’ Story Going Viral Has Some Holes in It

I'll admit, after reading the story of a "restaurant" that did a "study" (sorry for all of the "quotation marks"), I thought it sounded legit enough to post it on Facebook, so I did. Later, I read another article on the Happy Place blog that disputed some of the "results" listed in the original article. Are you still with me? Good.

I usually try to check things out at places like Snopes.com (an excellent resource for sorting out online fact from crap), but this time, I didn't do any fact-checking. Happy Place did, though, and you can see what they concluded here.
