University of Houston-Victoria Is Now Texas A&M University-Victoria
It is official: Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation officially transferring the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) to the Texas A&M University System. The institution, now named Texas A&M University-Victoria, becomes the 12th university in the Texas A&M System, a move that promises educational and economic growth.
“This is a historic milestone for our community that will elevate business and education in our region for generations to come,” said Mayor Duane Crocker. “I am thankful to Senator Kolkhorst for authoring this bill, to Representative Louderback for his support, and to the many local leaders who championed this cause. I look forward to this exciting new chapter for our local university and our community.”
Benefits of the transfer include:
- · Expanded access to academic and institutional resources and support
- · A broader range of academic programs
- · New agricultural and engineering degrees tailored to regional workforce needs
- · Increased name recognition to help attract students, residents, businesses and funding opportunities
This transfer also comes as Victoria College is undertaking its own developments, creating an even greater potential for community growth and prosperity supported by our two higher education institutions.
The Texas A&M System and the University of Houston System are working collaboratively to finalize the transition, which is expected to be completed by the legislation’s effective date.
