THROWBACK THURSDAY: Scott, Santleben, Elder, and Wagner Fields
It's time for another Throwback Thursday topic. When you drive in Riverside Park today, you see a few backstops that are used as practice fields. However, they were not just backstops; that was Victoria's home for Little League and brought some epic weekend nights of baseball in Victoria.
There were a total of six fields for the Little League games, eight fields if you include the two softball fields.
The younger ones played tee ball and minor league games at Wagner, Hernandez, and sometimes Field 1. Wagner faced the street, and Hernandez faced the pasture, and you could definitely smell cow manure while playing. That site now has a building from the City of Victoria. You can still see remnants of Field 1 across the street.
Scott and Santelben had the best concessions stand.
The big boys played at Scott, Santelben, and Elder Fields, which are still visible with backstops today. Not only were some epic games played there, but it was also home to an awesome concessions stand. I can still remember trying to hit the ball in Scott Field while the sun was blaring in my eyes as it went down.
Elder Field was the most popular Little League field.
Elder Field hosted the most Little League playoff games in Victoria. It was definitely the biggest when it came to distance to the outfield fence. This field was also manicured just a little bit better than the others. What Little League team were you on in Victoria? Let us know and send us a message in the app.
