One Texas school district is running back into time with its new restrictive gender-based dress code policies. Forney, Texas has riled up quite a few feathers with their new 7-page dress code policies.

What you can't wear:

  • Hoodies
  • Jackets
  • Coats

Derick Hollaman, a concerned parent, said he spoke to the district to ask about the reasoning behind the changes. “I was told that hoodies were a safety issue that kids wouldn’t take the hoods off their head,” he said.

However, three specific items of clothing have many eyes raised. According to the new policy at Forney Independent School District, the following gender-specific items would no longer be allowed:

  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Skorts

“When I asked regarding the dresses, I was told that they were trying to teach professionalism,” Hollaman said.

PROFESSIONALISM OR TARGETING

I was today years old when I found out skirts and dresses were not professional, we might want to tell HR about that one. The official statement the district gave out was, "The dress code is meant to “improve student self-esteem, bridge socio-economic differences among students, and promote positive behavior, thereby enhancing school safety and improving the learning environment.”

It's interesting to note that three main items are singling out female students only, and if it was about professionalism, shouldn't they require male students to wear slacks, suits, and ties?

FIGHTING BACK

Brooklynn Hollaman, an incoming 10th grader is putting up a fight against the outdated policies. Students like Brooklynn heavily disagree with the new policy. Brooklyn has started a petition which has already gathered thousands of signatures against the new dress code.

Her parents said they fully support her. “I don’t think adding this extra dress code is going to help the situation at all,” said Amy Hollaman, Brooklynn’s mother.
