Someone took their position way too seriously when they were told they would be the "man of the people."

According to a report from the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Athens Mayor James “Monte” Montgomery,63, was arrested during a prostitution sting for the solicitation of a minor.

Montgomery was arrested by the Longview Police Department and arraigned to the Gregg County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bond. Montgomery is said to have paid his bond, and has since been released.

"Solicitation of a minor involves a defendant asking or engaging in a conversation with a minor and during the course of that conversation, the defendant asks (or solicits) the minor to meet them for the purpose of engaging in a sexual act," the DPS said in a statement.

The City of Athens posted the following statement via their official Facebook page:

"We were shocked to learn yesterday of Mr. Montgomery's arrest in Longview.
These are very serious allegations and the City of Athens does not take them lightly.

We are committed to the protection and safety of our children. The City Council will be considering all possible actions as details become available. As this is a Longview Police Department investigation, we have no information beyond what has been reported by the news media."

The recent election results show that Montgomery was re-elected as Mayor and his term is set for 2021-2023.

Unfortunately, this situation does not seem surprising here in Texas, as a multitude of men entrusted with public safety have broken their promises to the community by violating the very laws they vow to uphold.
