This probably doesn't come as a big surprise but Texas isn't exactly one of the safe states when it comes to COVID-19. WalletHub recently put together some numbers from the pandemic to see what states were the safest. Before we get into the criteria, here's the complete list. Oh, and by the way, New Mexico is one of the safest.

  1. Alaska
  2. New Mexico
  3. Hawaii
  4. Maine
  5. North Dakota
  6. Colorado
  7. Vermont
  8. Wyoming
  9. Washington
  10. Rhode Island
  11. Wisconsin
  12. Idaho
  13. Oregon
  14. Minnesota
  15. Missouri
  16. Connecticut
  17. Kansas
  18. South Carolina
  19. Montana
  20. South Dakota
  21. Utah
  22. Illinois
  23. New Hampshire
  24. Iowa
  25. Arizona
  26. Virginia
  27. Mississippi
  28. Nevada
  29. Oklahoma
  30. North Carolina
  31. Arkansas
  32. Indiana
  33. Maryland
  34. Nebraska
  35. West Virginia
  36. Louisiana
  37. Ohio
  38. California
  39. District of Columbia
  40. Delaware
  41. Pennsylvania
  42. Alabama
  43. Massachusetts
  44. Kentucky
  45. Michigan
  46. Tennessee
  47. Texas
  48. New Jersey
  49. Florida
  50. New York
  51. Georgia

So what are the criteria that put Texas this far down the list? You can't say it has to do with us having a Republican governor because New York is below us, and Governor Andrew Cuomo has really hosed up the pandemic response. Let's not forget he was totally doing some crafty things with the COVID-19 numbers.

Of the main criteria used to make this list, Texas doesn't come in the bottom five of any of them, but we're close enough to the bottom that we've at the bottom of the overall list. Here are the criteria:

  • Vaccination rate
  • Positive testing rate
  • Hospitalization rate
  • Death rate
  • Transmission rate

Again, this probably didn't come as much of a surprise. But that doesn't mean we can't turn this thing around at the end. It's almost over. The end is in sight. Just keep safe over Easter weekend.
