In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a 12-year-old girl in Christine, Texas, died Monday after her mother and stepfather failed to get medical help for life-threatening injuries. Instead of taking her to the hospital, they attempted to nurse her back to health with smoothies for four days, according to the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Miranda had been seriously injured the previous Thursday. However, her mother and stepfather, Gerald Gonzales, did not seek medical help, even though Miranda was mostly unconscious and unable to speak or move. Instead, they kept her on a pallet at home, trying to give her smoothies despite her inability to swallow.

“She was not talking. She basically could flutter her eyes and move her hands a little bit over a four-day period,” Sheriff David Soward said at a news conference, “and they had her laying on a pallet in the house.”

PARENTS CHARGED WITH FELONY FOR HEARTBREAKING DEATH

The sheriff believes the parents avoided medical care to keep law enforcement away. On Tuesday, Balbaneda and Gonzales were arrested and charged with a first-degree felony for injury to a child by omission.

The cause of Miranda’s injuries is still under investigation. Sheriff David Soward called the case unusual and tragic, noting that Miranda would have turned 13 later this month.
