In a press release issued by the Texas Animal Commission, a dog in North Texas has caught the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. Let me be clear, the dog did not catch COVID-19, but there is cause for concern.  The Tarrant County dog was confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2.

The veterinarian chose to test the dog for SARS-CoV-2 as a precautionary measure after its owners were confirmed to have COVID-19.  The veterinarian reports the two-year-old dog is healthy at this time.“Based on current knowledge, there is no evidence that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2to people,” said Dr. Andy Schwartz, State Veterinarian.

While this is the first confirmed positive pet test in Texas, it's not the first in the United States.  The USDA is tracking all positive animals, you can the latest numbers by visiting their website by clicking here.

If you are sick with COVID-19 or suspect you are infected, restrict contact with your pets and other animals, just like you would other people.

Let's take a look at the latest COVID-19 numbers in the Crossroads.

As of 7:45 pm yesterday (7/9/2020) there were 137 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria County, and 75 newly recovered individuals. Victoria currently has a total of 1,601 confirmed cases of COVID-19.  Out of the 1,601 confirmed cases, 830 have recovered and have bee 10 deaths caused by COVID-19 in the Crossroads.
