My San Antonio reports that a South Texas US Customs and Border Protection officer was paid over $443K in kickbacks.  According to the article, Christopher Cassity pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges earlier this month.  His prison term could be up to 20 years in the prison and a possible fine of $250,000.

WHAT DID HE DO?

According to a press release, Hamdani says the officer specifically directed and pressured CBP contracting officials to select contractors from a preferred list who bid on contracts to upgrade CBP’s information security system in various CBP facilities. In total, court documents revealed that Cassity’s business received approximately $814,570 in payments for CBP contracts during the bribery scheme.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST:

The border officer received 58 kickback payments throughout the scheme, totaling $443,125. Officials noted that Cassity had attempted to hide the bribery by filing the payments for unnecessary and unperformed services, including translation services.
