South Padre County Beaches to Close Over Fourth of July

Beaches closed on the 4th of July?? Is this a Jaws reboot? Nope. It's just life during a pandemic.

Cameron County officials started making plans on Monday of this week to close down beach access on South Padre Island due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases in Texas. In order to prevent the massive crowds that come with the Fourth of July, the county is closing parks and beach access.

The closure actually begins tonight at 7 P.M. and beach access will remain closed through July 13th according to MySanAntonio.com. Cameron County will also be adding a nightly curfew 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. for all children under the age of 17. A curfew for adults will be in place from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M. The order from the county says residents can only drive during curfew hours if they are headed to work. The county has also asked all residents to wear face coverings in any and all public areas and to stay home as much as possible for the next two weeks. The following county beaches will close tonight through July 13th:

• - Isla Blanca Park, South Padre Island
• - Andy Bowie Park, South Padre Island
• - EK Atwood Park, South Padre Island
• County Beach Access No. 3
• - County Beach Access No. 4
• - County Beach Access No. 5
• - County Beach Access No. 6

City beach access on South Padre Island will remain open according to Mayor McNulty. The city is working hard with the General Land Office who take care of our Texas beaches to come up with a long term plan for social distancing for the Island which saw 113 new cases on Monday, bringing the total up 2,296.
