Victoria County Tax Assessor-Collector Rena Scherer has announced that she will run in 2016 for a final term in office. A Republican, Scherer began serving in the Tax Office in 1981 as a Clerk in the Property Tax Department. She was elected Tax Assessor-Collector in 1992 following the retirement of long-time Tax Assessor-Collector Bessie Lassman, and was re-elected to a new term in 2012 by a solid margin.

A certified and registered Tax Assessor-Collector with over 30 years of experience, Scherer possesses extensive hands-on expertise handling complex property tax, business tax, vehicle registration, and titling issues. She has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education, and been honored with Outstanding Service and Distinguished Service awards from the Tax Assessor-Collectors Association of Texas.

“I believe serving as Tax Assessor-Collector should be about priorities, not personalities or partisan politics. My number one priority is to serve the people of our county, and my track record of accountability and service speaks for itself. The Texas Constitution places many responsibilities on Tax Assessor-Collectors, and I take these very seriously. Our Tax Office provides services for property and business tax payment, vehicle and equipment registration or titling, and TABC license renewal. Our office accepts property tax payments for 14 different local entities, and renews registrations for nearly 90,000 vehicles annually. Effectively supervising a Tax Office like ours with numerous employees and duties requires skills and knowledge that come from years of training and experience,” Scherer said.

Scherer, 60, graduated from Stroman High School and attended Victoria College. A mother and grandmother, she has been married to Calvin Scherer for over 40 years. The Scherers own Scherer Kubota, a local farm equipment company founded by their family in 1949.

“Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not a politician, and I can tell you that I’m not interested in staying in office forever. I’m running this final time to wrap up ongoing projects in our office, some of which are tied to implementing changes in state laws. Then I’ll be ready to hand over the keys to someone else and enjoy retirement,” Scherer commented.
We wish Rena the best of luck in her future endeavors.
