If you're like me, you haven't thought too much about what plasma is and why our medical and health care community needs it. I recently donated plasma, though, and I encourage you to do it, too, if you're able.

Plasma is needed to make many medications that treat and prevent life-threatening illnesses — many which have no other treatments, so these patients rely on plasma donors to maintain their quality of life. They've taken a double-hit with the pandemic, as many are at higher-risk for COVID-19 and the plasma donations upon which they rely have gone down.

Donating plasma is pretty easy, though. As my friends over at Biomat USA Victoria explain:

Since plasma is mostly water plus therapeutic proteins and antibodies, the body quickly regenerates the plasma so a donor can give up to twice a week with a full day between donations. We recommend that donors eat a healthy meal, drink plenty of fluids, and get a good night of sleep prior to coming in to donate plasma. Once at the center, they can relax, check their phone or catch up on their latest tv show!

Donors undergo a screening to ensure it's safe for them to donate plasma. They also must:

  • Weigh more than 110 pounds
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 69
  • Have a valid proof of ID, proof of social security number, and proof of permanent address

They also collect plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19, which can be used to treat those still fighting the virus.

Donors are compensated for their time; new donors could earn up to $1,100 their first month. So join me: Donate your plasma today and make some money. Plasma can't be synthetically created but by us joining together, we can help each other now and in the future. That’s what life is all about — helping each other.
