Las Vegas Shooting Site Is Being Repurposed as Community Center
The Las Vegas Strip festival grounds that were the site of the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting are now going to be repurposed into a community and athletic center, according to MGM Resorts, who announced the plans on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
The area will also be utilized for parking to accommodate the new stadium being built for the NFL's Oakland Raiders, the company announced Tuesday. It will also create a space on the property to remember the victims.
Although the property will be transformed, MGM recognized in a statement that the area "will forever be linked to the tragic loss of life that took place there. We will never forget the victims, and all of those impacted by that evening."
There is no timeline for the completion of the renovation, but MGM says it is aiming to host high school basketball tournaments, indoor soccer for children and a practice space for the WNBA team, the Las Vegas Aces, eventually as part of its overall plan.
The company is the owner of the Route 91 festival grounds and the Mandalay Bay Resort, where in October 2017 a gunman in a high-rise suite opened fire on the crowd and killed 58 in the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured at the country music festival, which had Jason Aldean as headliner that particular night.
