What an incredible turnout to help our community! After spending the morning helping to pick up trash along Victoria’s roadways, one might be grateful for a cup of coffee and a foot massage.

During the Keep Victoria Beautiful Fall Sweep on Sept. 21, the team led by County Commissioner Jason Ohrt made a fitting discovery while picking up trash along Loop 463: a Keurig coffee machine and a foot massager.

There was no need to plug in the discarded devices, since The Salvation Army had already prepared coffee and donuts for the volunteers, and Chick-fil-A provided food after the cleanup—a well-earned reward for the 368 volunteers who had picked up 195 bags of trash and other debris along 24 miles of roadway.

The following awards were earned during the cleanup:

  • Most Trash Picked Up by a Team: the team led by City of Victoria Development Services Assistant Director Rick Madrid
  • Most Spirited: the 54-member Dow Chemical team
  • Most Unusual Item: the Keurig machine and foot massager found by Commissioner Ohrt’s team
  • Most Prized Item: The team led by Keep Victoria Beautiful Board Chair Meridith Byrd found a pair of glasses that had been lost by Municipal Court Operations Supervisor Maria Bell.

The honorees will be formally recognized during Keep Victoria Beautiful’s annual volunteer appreciation event in January.
