If you plan to hunt or fish this year in Texas, it’s time to pay for a new license.

New hunting/fishing licenses went on sale Thursday for the 2024-25 season. Current-year licenses expire at the end of August.

Texans purchase more than 3.9 million hunting and fishing licenses each year, which funds conservation efforts and recreational opportunities, including fish stocking, wildlife management, habitat restoration and public hunting leases, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said in a news release.

A hunting license is required of any person, regardless of age, for hunting animals, birds, frogs and turtles. The only exceptions are feral hogs, coyotes and fur-bearing animals if the hunter already has a commercial trapper’s license.

How Much Does A Hunting or Fishing License Cost?

Prices for licenses vary. The $68 “Super Combo” license package represents the best value and includes resident hunting and fishing licenses and stamps for archery, freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing and migratory game birds. A resident hunting license, valid for any game bird or animal, is $25. A resident fishing license for both fresh and saltwater is $47.

Texas residents on full-time active military service and all qualifying disabled veterans are required to have a license to hunt and fish in Texas, but those licenses are free.

Many outdoorsmen will be heading to Lubbock’s Texas Parks & Wildlife office to renew their licenses.

The interior of the building was damaged in a fire earlier this year, but game wardens are still up and running, ready to get people out to the fields.

How Do I Buy A Hunting or Fishing License In Texas?

People can purchase a physical or digital license. However, once a digital license is purchased, people cannot go back and buy a physical copy.

Digital licenses can only be purchased online and will be accessible through the Texas Hunt & Fish and TPWD Outdoor Annual mobile apps.

Digital tagging is required of digital license holders through the Texas Hunt & Fish mobile app. Digital license holders will not receive a printed license or tags but must keep their digital license available via mobile device while in the field.

A $5 administrative fee is charged for online transactions.
