Lights, camera, Texas. As it turns out, the Lone Star State has played host to some pretty awesome films. After all, what's not to love? Texas has gorgeous landscapes and bustling cities making the perfect backdrop. From action-packed westerns to heartwarming dramas, Texas has been a popular destination for filmmakers seeking genuine scenic beauty.

The news website Caller-Times has listed some of these great and not-so-great movies filmed in the state. However, I wanted to take things a step further with the Fourth of July coming up. How about patriotic movies that were filmed in Texas? Below are some of my favorites. How many of these have you seen?

Lone Survivor (2013)

This one is based on a true story. "Lone Survivor" follows a group of Navy SEALs on a mission in Afghanistan. Much of the film unfolds overseas; however, several scenes were filmed in Texas, adding a nice touch to this story of bravery and sacrifice.


The Alamo (2004)

"The Alamo" takes us back to the legendary Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. While the original story takes place in San Antonio, the movie was primarily filmed near Austin. What better place than Texas to capture the genuine history of the Alamo and the courage displayed?


 

Friday Night Lights (2004)

This is an all-time favorite for many reasons. It focuses on a high school football team from Odessa as they go after the state championship. The main takeaway from this movie is the dedication and unity of the community. "Friday Night Lights" encompasses the patriotic fever surrounding football in the Lone Star State.


 

American Sniper (2014)

"American Sniper" follows the life of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, spotlighting his service and sacrifice. While it's true that most of the story is set in Iraq, key scenes from the movie were filmed in Texas.


 

Apollo 13 (1995)

This space-themed film tells the incredible true story of the Apollo 13 mission and the heroic efforts to bring the astronauts home safely. With parts of the movie set in Houston, it pays tribute to the state's role in the space program.

Texas has had captivating settings for many movies, highlighting its landscapes, communities, and history. Whether it's a war drama or an inspiring sports story, these movies have not only entertained but also brought to light the unique character of our state.
