NEWS FLASH: IT'S HOT.

Hazardous weather is hitting Texas and spoiler alert: it's going to be HOT. The heat index is predicted to be between 105 and 109 today in the Crossroads. 

Unfortuuently it doesn't look like things are going to cool down in the near future. The National Weather Service Thursday, June 8 through Tuesday, June 14 heat index values are going to stay between 105 to 109 degrees over Victoria and the Crossroads each afternoon.

This type of heat brings a higher risk of heat stroke and other health issues. Heat stroke is no joke, it is the most serious heat-related illness. According to the CDC, "Heat stroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down."

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF A HEAT STROKE

Here are some common warning signs of a heat stroke:

  • An extremely high body temperature (above 103°F)
  • Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating)
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Throbbing headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness

There are strategies and tips to help prevent a heat-related illness. Use these tips to stay safe in the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty
  • Stay cool indoors when possible
  • Carefully schedule outdoor activities
  • Pace yourself
  • Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
  • Never leave children or pets in a vehicle
