Confirmed: ‘American Idol’ Returning on ABC
American Idol has been confirmed to return to television in 2018.
The iconic reality television singing competition, which touched off the reality TV competition craze that has launched the careers of many singing stars across all genres, will return to the small screen in 2018, two years after the final episode aired on Fox in 2016, but there are some major changes in store for the program, including networks. Idol's 15-year run was all on Fox, but the show will air on ABC in 2018, confirming rumors that were first reported by TMZ last week and picked up by All Access.
The show confirmed the rumors in a tweet on Tuesday morning, saying simply, "This…is #AmericanIdol--coming to @ABCNetwork in 2018!"

Good Morning America also confirmed the news on Tuesday morning, with Robin Roberts saying, "Very exciting announcement ... we can reveal right here for the first time that ABC is bringing American Idol back!"
The show launched the careers of a number of country stars, including Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, Kellie Pickler and more. First season winner Kelly Clarkson has also put her hand into country music over the years. Trent Harmon was the winner for the most recent season of Idol, and Season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina recently scored her first No. 1 hit with "Road Less Traveled."
There has been no news so far regarding who will host the new season of American Idol when it returns, or who will serve as judges. According to GMA, those details are set to be announced at a later date.
Ryan Seacrest, who hosted the show for its run on Fox, recently began co-hosting Live! With Kelly & Ryan alongside Kelly Ripa on ABC, and he said Monday (May 8) that he didn't know that American Idol was returning until last week.
"I had said at the end of the series, ‘Goodbye for now,’ hoping somewhere it would come back," he said (quote via People).
"I had no idea it was being talked about to come here until late last week I heard a rumor in the news and made a phone call, and they said, 'Yeah, it may actually end up here.' And I said, 'Well, that’s kind of good to know since I work here,'" he added. "So what I do know is, apparently it’s unofficial but very close to being said it will be here. I don’t know if I can host it."
