Coast Guard intercept 1000 Pounds of Illegal Sharks Off Coast of Corpus

The US Coast Guard has been busy off the Coast of Texas! This weekend, the Coast Guard rescued a 93-year-old woman from a Cruise Ship off the coast of Galveston.  Also this weekend the US Coast Guard intercepted an illegal operation of 1000 pounds of illegal shark off the Coast of Corpus Christi. This status was posted by the US Coast Guard Heartland Facebook page.

According to valleycentral.com, A boat crew from the Coast Guard’s South Padre Island station, with assistance from the Corpus Christi Sector and Air Station, stopped a lancha with four Mexican fishermen, a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard stated. “Lanchas are frequently used to transport illegal narcotics to the U.S. and illegally fish in the United States’ Exclusive Zone,” the release stated.

The U.S. Coast Guard describes a lancha as a 20-30 foot long boat with a slender profile and one motor, capable of traveling at speeds more than 30 miles per hour.

After the boat was stopped by the US Coast Guard, authorities seized 1,000 pounds of shark, fishing gear, radios GPS devices, and high flyers. The fishermen were detained and transferred to border enforcement agencies for processing, according to the release.

The US Coast Guard received a request for a medevac from the Carnival Vista Cruise Ship around 10 o'clock on Saturday night. An elderly woman was experiencing symptoms of respiratory failure, pneumonia, and septic shock. What a scary situation to have on open waters, luckily they were fairly close to the Texas coast.

The United States Coast Guard Crews launched a helicopter to the Carnival Vista cruise ship, which was about 90 miles away from Galveston. The woman was hoisted from the cruise ship along with a nurse to the UT Medical Branch. She is now in stable condition. Take a look at the dramatic video posted by USCG Heartland Facebook page.
