It should prove to be a battle royal this Saturday in Riverside Park.

Each September, the city of Victoria looks forward to watching a recreational rivalry between the Victoria Police Department and the Victoria Fire Department, and this year is no different. Starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, the departments will face-off at the fourth annual Battle of the Badges kickball game. The game will be at Memorial Stadium in Riverside Park.

Battle of the Badges is more than just a fun rivalry between the departments - the event kicks off the city's United Way campaign each year and serves as a fundraiser that benefits United Way partner organizations in Victoria County. United Way's mission is to provide community resources for the common good where all individuals can achieve their potential though education, income stability and healthy lives. Last year, the Victoria County United Way raised $620,000 and 17 United Way agencies were awarded grants. An estimated 50,000 people from Victoria and surrounding counties were helped by the agencies funded by United Way.

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Saturday evening that will help others in our community who are in need, then please plan to join us for Battle of the Badges and cheer on your favorite team. The Victoria Advocate reports there will be plenty of food, drinks, and games for the kids and even some live music. Admission is $5 per person and kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Come and see whether the police department will break the fire department's winning streak and take home the coveted Battle of the Badges trophy. The game is sponsored by Citizens Medical Center, Sam's Club, H-E-B, the Victoria Generals, the Victoria County United Way and the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department.
