Texas Phenomenon: An Empty San Antino Riverwalk
his may be new knowledge for those new to Texas. The San Antonio Riverwalk is drained every two years, and it is currently empty. If you want to see this Texas phenomenon, you have till Monday, January 19, which is when the riverwalk is set to be filled and back to normal.
The San Antonio Riverwalk is drained biannually for routine maintenance and cleaning. If you've ever visited the riverwalk, you know it can get pretty dirty. And when it's drained, it's kind of gross to see all the mud and grime that lurks beneath.
The San Antonio Riverwalk is very shallow.
What people don't realize is just how shallow the Riverwalk is. This is something that I learned on the riverboat ride, which I have ridden more times that I can remember. In fact, I could probably tell you some of the jokes that they use during their tour.
But if you fall off the riverboat ride or the sidewalk, you'll only fall in about three to four feet of water. So, you really don't even have to know how to swim! You can just stand right up.
@sanantoniospots The River Walk is a natural bend in the San Antonio River, but it is controlled by human-made locks and dams that keep the water level under tight control. A hundred years ago this part of the river flooded and devastated downtown. That won’t happen again. If you go see this (it’s interesting but a little smelly), I recommend parking on the street near the corner of Jack White and Villita. It’s about $2/hour but free after 6:00 pm. #sanantoniothingstodo#sananronioriverwalk#freefun#urbanstrolls♬ original sound - SanAntonioSpots

Strange treasures lurk beneath the San Antonio Riverwalk.
One of the main reasons for draining the riverwalk is to clean out things that have been dropped in the river. What do you think they find? Thanks to the YouTube channel Jigging With Jordan, Brandon Jordan, a fisherman and treasure hunter, takes us on a deep dive with funky finds from the bottom of the Riverwalk.
