Yoakum Library to Hold Luncheon

The Friends of the Library, a support group for The Carl and Mary Welhausen Library, is hosting its annual Spring Luncheon on April 28 at the Yoakum Community Center, 105 Huck St., Yoakum. The featured speaker is Julian Read, author of “JFK’s Final Hours in Texas: An Eyewitness Remembers the Tragedy and its Aftermath.”The Victoria Advocate reports the doors will open at 11 a.m. with a catered meal at 11:30 a.m. Read will be present at 11 a.m. with copies of the book on display and for sale, and his presentation will begin at 11:50 a.m. Luncheon tickets may be purchased for $10 through a member of the Friends’ executive board or at The Carl and Mary Welhausen Library.

Read, the national media representative for former Texas Gov. John B. Connally in 1963, is one of the few remaining eyewitnesses to the tragedy and was on the White House press corps bus as part of John Kennedy’s motorcade in downtown Dallas on Nov. 22. The book describes the agony of that day and the weeks immediately following for those at the epicenter of the terrible history-changing legacies of the Kennedy assassination for Texas and our nation.

The local community and surrounding areas are welcomed and invited to become a part of The Friends of the Library, a vital organization that provides the city library with financial aid and volunteer work. The annual membership fee is $10. For more information, contact the library at 361-293-5001.
