If you enjoy good theatre, there is no lack of it in Vic toria and the surrounding communities. Whaton's 'Plaza Theatre' has it's final production of the season coming up in a couple of weeks.

The Plaza Theatre on Monterey Square in Wharton will present "Hairspray" as the final production of its 2011-12 season. The musical will be performed Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Aug. 3-19. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m, says the Victoria Advocate.

Break out the Aqua Net and cheer on pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad as she pursues her dream of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show. It's the '60s, and change is in the air. The loveable, larger-than-life heroine manages to replace the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love - all while singing, dancing and never mussing her hair.

Based on John Waters' campy film, the Broadway production of "Hairspray" won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score and went on to inspire the 2007 movie remake.

"'Hairspray' is difficult to produce for many reasons but I have to say this cast and crew have stepped up and met the challenge," said Keri Graff, assistant director. "Individually, each person is so talented and collectively they bring such energy to the stage that it's contagious."

Tickets will be $15 for general admission and $13 for students and senior citizens. For more information call 979-282-2226 or online at whartonplazatheatre.org.
