The annual Weesatche Volunteer Fire Department chili and barbecue cook-off will include more activities. Margaritas and a bake sale have been added to the event, which is celebrating its 14th year, Nadine Karnei, volunteer responder and treasurer, told the Victoria Advocate. The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Weesatche Community Center. A live auction will follow announcements.

Competition categories include Chili Appreciation Society International and homestyle chili, jackpot beans, margaritas, open chicken, spare ribs, pies and brisket. Categories are open to all ages. Only adults may compete in CASI cook-off. CASI chili has no fillers and is made from scratch. Competitors in the CASI event earn points toward competing in the international finals in Terlingua from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1

The fire department raised $43,000 last year, which went to the upkeep of the department's truck and building, Karnei said.
