Victoria Advocate Honored In State Contest
We are quite blessed to have a great, community-minded newspaper in the Crossroads and now they have been duly recognized in the 'Texas Better Newspaper" competition.
The Victoria Advocate earned first place in newswriting in the annual Texas Better Newspaper Contest. The Advocate won for two news stories, "Same-sex marriage" by Gheni Platenburg and "Campus chaos" by Kayla Bell and Erin Pradia. The newspaper also took second place in feature story, winning for two entries, "Fighting back, giving back" by J.R. Ortega and "The pull of water" by Dianna Wray.
The awards were announced at the Texas Press Association's annual convention in San Antonio, says the Victoria Advocate.
In addition, the Advocate took third place in general excellence and in the contest's overall sweepstakes, competing against newspapers with a circulation between 7,000 and 99,000. This year, 169 newspapers submitted 1,703 entries in the contest.
Other Advocate winners:
• Sports photos, third place, Frank Tilley and Angeli Wright
• News photos, fourth place, Todd Krainin and Angeli Wright
• Website, fourth place
• Community service, fourth place, Jennifer Preyss for "Barefoot Sunday." (way to go Jenny)
